Washington State PTA has made steady progress toward our goal of building a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable association. We have made significant headway through information gathering, changing our organizational structure, increasing accessibility, and broadening our local PTA support. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department will lead from a role of influence with our district
core values passion, respect, integrity that fosters and embrace diversity and equitable outcomes
through shared responsibility for:
• Culture – creating a diverse, equitable, and collaborative culture centered upon strong
partnerships within and outside the district towards shared goals.
• Climate – creating a climate of access and inclusion for all by continuously preparing,
inviting, and welcoming people to an environment where all can thrive within our
district.
• Instruction - actively and intentionally using instructional models and practices that
incorporate content that reflects diverse ways of knowing, being and experiencing the
world.
• Systems - creating system accountability in which we are continuously evaluating and
assessing progress towards realization of the district’s vision for equity and diversity.

Un poco acerca de la rica historia de The Arc of Snohomish County
En 1943, un pequeño grupo de padres y otras personas preocupadas se unieron para actuar como voces a favor del cambio. En ese momento, se sabía poco sobre la condición de la discapacidad intelectual (en ese momento denominada “retraso mental”) o sus causas. Prácticamente no había programas ni actividades en las comunidades para ayudar en el desarrollo y el cuidado de niños y adultos con discapacidad intelectual o para apoyar a las familias.
En ese momento, era común que los médicos les dijeran a los padres que el mejor lugar para su hijo era una institución. Envalentonados por su deseo colectivo de criar a sus hijos en el hogar y su obstinada negativa a aceptar que la institucionalización era la única opción, los fundadores de The Arc lucharon aún más duro.
Como todos los padres de cualquier niño, querían más para sus hijos. Querían que sus hijos llevaran una vida plena en la comunidad y no encerrados en instituciones oscuras. Fue en ese espíritu que nació The Arc.
